๐ Wiki: Snipe-IT to Slack Integration Guide¶
This guide outlines the step-by-step process to connect Snipe-IT asset management with Slack using Incoming Webhooks. Once configured, asset movements (check-outs, check-ins, license assignments, etc.) will automatically post real-time alerts to your designated Slack channel.
๐ ๏ธ Phase 1: Create a Webhook via Slack API¶
-
Launch the App Wizard:
- Navigate to the Slack API Apps dashboard and sign in.
- Click the Create New App button in the top-right corner.
-
Select App Configuration:
- Choose the Blank app option from the dialog box and click Continue.
-
Configure App Scopes:
- On the What it can do in Slack? (Step 2 of 4) screen, click inside the Add Bot Scopes field (or the search bar).
- Search for
incoming-webhook, select it from the dropdown to add it to your scopes, and click Continue.
-
Configure App Events:
- On the What it can respond to in Slack? (Step 3 of 4) screen, leave all fields blank (Keep it at 0), as Snipe-IT only requires one-way outbound notifications. Click Continue.
-
Finalize App Creation:
- Review the final confirmation step and click Create or Finish.
- On the success modal, click the green Go to App Settings button at the bottom right to enter the management dashboard.
-
Retrieve the Webhook URL:
- From the left sidebar sidebar, under the Features section, click on Incoming Webhooks.
- Toggle the Activate Incoming Webhooks switch to On.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Add New Webhook to Workspace button.
- Select your destination Slack channel (e.g.,
#IT-Asset-Ops) and click Allow / Authorize. - Once the page reloads, scroll down to the table and copy the generated Webhook URL (starts with
https://slack.com...).
๐ฅ๏ธ Phase 2: Configure Snipe-IT Integration¶
-
Navigate to Integration Settings:
- Log into your Snipe-IT dashboard with administrative privileges.
- Go to Admin > Settings > Integrations from the top or side navigation menu.
-
Enter the Parameters:
- Integration Option: Select Slack from the dropdown menu.
- Slack Endpoint: Paste the long Webhook URL you copied from the Slack API dashboard.
-
Slack Channel: Type the exact name of the authorized channel, including the hashtag (e.g.,
#IT-Asset-Ops). -
Slack Botname: Set a custom display name for the bot inside the channel (e.g.,
Asset-Bot).
-
Test and Save:
- Before saving, click the Test Slack integration button.
- Verify your Slack channel received the message: "Oh hai! It looks like your Slack integration with Snipe-IT is working!".
- Click the blue Save button at the bottom right to apply the changes permanently.
๐ Important Notes & Security¶
- Security Disclaimer: The Webhook URL acts like a secret password. Anyone with access to this URL can post unauthorized messages to your channel. Keep it confidential.
- Automation: Once enabled, all successful check-out and check-in actions performed in Snipe-IT will instantly generate rich-text activity logs in your Slack channel for the IT team to review.
